[syslinux] sub-menu's

I tried that but i'm not actually getting sub menu's, it is just
making one really really long menu...
i have been trying the whole
MENU BEGIN
LABEL blah
menu label
kernel
append
menu label
kernel
append
menu begin
label blah
menu label
kernel
append
menu label
kernel
append
menu end
menu label
kernel
append
menu end
I've tried lots of variations of all of that... but it always ends up
as one big long list...
is there any way to create a menu item that opens a new menu list like
in a new window.
