In fact, I discovered that the bug is caused when there is no primary hard disk image (no hard disk 0).
When an HD image is created and attached, ISOLINUX works well:
ISOLINUX 1.75 2002-06-14 Copyright (C) 1994-2002 H. Peter Anvin
isolinux: Starting up, DL = 99
isolinux: Loaded spec packet OK, drive = 99
isolinux: Sector size appears to be 0800
isolinux: Loading main image from LBA = 0000001C
isolinux: Sectors to load = 0004
isolinux: Loaded boot image, verifying...
isolinux: Main image read, jumping to main code...
isolinux: Root directory at LBA = 00000017
isolinux: isolinux directory at LBA = 00000018
isolinux: About to load config file...
isolinux: Configuration file opened...
Queer bug isn't it?

Subject: ISOLINUX failure with Connectix Virtual PC 4.3.2
To: syslinux at zytor.com
Hello,
I have discovered an incompatibility between Connectix Virtual PC 4.3.2 and
ISOLINUX 1.75:
when I boot a .iso CD image using Virtual PC 4.3.2 software, I get the following
errors (debug version):
ISOLINUX 1.75 2002-06-14 Copyright (C) 1994-2002 H. Peter Anvin
isolinux: Starting up, DL = 99
isolinux: Loading spec packet failed, trying to wing it...
isolinux: Extremely broken BIOS detected, last ditch attempt with drive = 99
isolinux: Failed to get sector size, assuming 0800
isolinux: Sector size appears to be 0000
isolinux: Loading main image from LBA = 00000CFD
isolinux: Sectors to load = 0004
isolinux: Disk error 01, AX = 42FD, drive 99
Boot failed: press a key to retry...
This problem doesn't occur with Virtual PC 4.2 and VMWare Workstation 3.1
You can fetch an evaluation version of Connectix Virtual PC at
http://www.connectix.com/, this will help you to debug this problem!
