I am aware of the age, that is why I am trying to use a newer version.
However *ANY* version newer than 0.67 fails. This includes 2.0.
2.0 and the later 0.7x series begins the boot and then I get:

AX000
BX000
CX000
DX000
80000

over and over and over .....

We actually tried 2.0 first, then an 0.7x (I forget which maybe 0.75).
Neither worked. So we decided to try the last one we tried a few months back
which turned out to be 0.66. 0.67 worked. 0.70 failed with a hang.

So this boils down to what functionality changed between 0.67 and 0.70?
