FYI, this does not work under current Debian testing/unstable. I
suspect there are some differences in the termcap libraries. Any
suggestions on what I might try?

I found the message in the debian archives - something about not being
able to link readline to tftp-hpa because of its license, which is
claimed to be BSD-with-advertising-clause by the Debian package, at least.

I wasn't aware that GPL was link-incompatible with old-style BSD. Or is
that a debian-specific interpretation?

Thanks,
