Maybe you built a zimage instead of a bzimage. The 'old kernel image' suggests
that. For more I just lost my crystal to actually look at your machine, since you gave
almost no info what you did and what actually happend, and I'm not trying to guess
that.

BTW, this has nothing to do with PXE, despite the subject stating this ...
