[syslinux] Disk error 01: AX=4200, drive 82

I have located the problem. It is related to the attempted inclusion of
a picture by boot.msg - it turns out that picture was length zero and
its attempted inclusion messed up everything.
Now, the reason why the picture length was 0 is again the same old perl
UTF-8 problems in RedHat 9. The ppmtolss16 tool is perl and when ran
with LANG=en_US.UTF-8 this is what will output:
/usr/bin/ppmtolss16: Premature EOF at (319,212) of (640,256)
and the output is empty. After switching LANG to en_US it will be just fine.
