[syslinux] Use DISPLAY codes with PXELINUX?

Did you enter "<" "F" "F" ">"? That doesn't work. Read your Editors
documentation to know how to enter an Ascii char (in Hexadecimal, Octal
or Decimal notation). "less" should say something about the file being
binary when viewing it...
