Hmmm... DOS is hideously dependent on poking magic values in various 
BIOS locations.  Unfortunately I don't think I'll have time to rip apart 
a system to run without HD any time soon, although I might be able to 
turn the HD controller off in the BIOS.

Unfortunately, it's likely to still be BIOS-dependent, and you didn't 
give any BIOS details.
