The only thing that stands out to me are the instructions:

               rep stosb                       ; Null kernel name
and
               rep stosw

Both are in parseconfig...

This might be a VIA C3 instruction problem, as 3.08-pre5 works on my 900
MHz Athlon.  Let's see if I can find an VIA C3 assembly instruction
manual on the web before I go ahead and send this message.  :-)
