Fair enough. This happens in multiple machines, different motherboards
(however, all using Intel chipsets and e100 or e1000 based cards).

These definitely exhibit the problem.

Pro/100S Desktop 
Pro/100S Server
Onboard Pro/100 in 865GV motherboard
Pro/1000MT
Onboard Pro/1000 (CSA) in PC-DL motherboard
Onboard Pro/1000 CT in NCCH-DR motherboard

This is very easy to replicate: on any server with e100 or e1000 card, 
load latest Intel Boot Agent (IBAUTIL) - 'localboot' will stop working 
after 4.x firmware loaded. (Either 4.0 or 4.1).
