One last question, in this thread anyway :)
To fully automate this I need a DOS hex editor that can be driven from
the command line. It only needs to replace the first two bytes of the
MBR. Do you know of such a beast?

Excellent!
It's entirely possible BBS is much better supported in 2006 than last
time I looked at this stuff, which was probably in 1999. I think I have
to throw myself an ESTALE and sit in the corner.
