I have similar problem/symptom when trying to boot Fedora Core 5 and 6
off of CD/DVD on my laptop.  I discovered a workaround that works for
some versions, for me, like using the following at the boot prompt:

knoppix initrd=initrd.img

It may not help you, but give it a try.
