A follow-up to my own message, for the benefit of others.  I had my DOC 
formatted with the 5.1.4 BIOS/firmware.  Using the older 4.2 firmware 
SYSLINUX was able to fire up and boot successfully.

I'm not sure why this is.  I'd be glad to help troubleshoot and if I 
have time I'll dig into the code, but x86 assembly is not my forte. :)
