[syslinux] MEMDISK not working on Thinkpads

Mine is an R50e.  Have you got something more similar perhaps?  It
does depend on the model, as hpa also noticed.  Maybe it isn't worth
investing much into this on our part, as he now got a misbehaving
model and declared intent to debug it in a couple of weeks...  Unless
he needs some help, of course.
