[syslinux] "sector read error" with Syslinux

This actually worked or not? you seem to be running the DOS binary 
(syslinux.com) under Windows (command prompt/console) rather than the 
Win32/Windows binary (syslinux.exe). Not entirely sure this would work 
due to requiring direct disk access, asking Windows for locking drives etc.
