[syslinux] Having problem with menu.c32 on serial console

I should also have mentioned the terminal background goes from white
to black, and the corner shows up on top of the black background. So
another data point that says something is working.

I forgot to mention that I was using 38400, 8 bit, 1 stop, no parity
and no flow control and also hardware flow control (on the teraterm
connected via null modem cable).  I'll try the 2400 test when I am in
the office next week.

In the interim is there a file with the data sequence I can cat in my
rxvt window to see if it hangs the window?
