[syslinux] reloading extlinux.conf freezes the system

Maybe another "ancient Debian stable binutils" issue.  Bochs floods my
terminal with LOCK prefix unallowed (op1=0x53, attr=0x0, mod=0x0, nnn=0)
messages if I try this.  Find the image attached.  Does it work for you?
