[syslinux] Segmentation fault in 3.63 on 16GB USB

Hi,
I bought a 16GB Transcend JetFlash V10 yesterday and am trying to
put the fc8 livecd on it (after filling it up with all sorts of
other junk :)

I've only plugged it into an fc8 machine (from unopened) - nothing else.

I also have a Toshiba U3 2GB USB.

The OS is fc8 fully updated except the kernel (2.6.23.15-137.fc8)

the livecd-iso-to-disk uses the command
"syslinux -d syslinux /dev/sdb1" to setup the boot.
This always gives a seg fault on the Transcend

It works fine (/dev/sdc1 ?) on the Toshiba

I thought it might be an old version problem (fc8 has 3.36)
so I got the RPM for 3.63 and updated it - but no change

Both devices are in their initial format (other than
trying to re-MBR with 'livecd-iso-to-disk' and set boot with 'parted')
The start=9 looks odd to me - but I haven't reformatted it,
so I presume that's how it was when I bought it.

Anyone got any suggestions about why it seg faults?
Is the Start=9 a problem?
If it is - should it seg fault?

An fdisk -l of them both gives:
