One folder of (at least) 20gb is completely inaccessable, I assume some of the file referencing data has been overwritten (not sure if it's called file allocation tables on NTFS, or even if it works that way).

Would 'deleted file recovery' programs be more appropriate than 'partition disk recovery' programs to retrieve the it?

Hi,
It all depends on how fragmented the drive was, as HPA has said you have
erased 250mb of data but that could be as little as 512bytes of a file
which would corrupt the rest of the file, the more fragmented your HDD
then the more files will have been corrupted. Generally speaking the
only types of file that would be recoverable in any sort of condition
after losing sections are non-binary files, of course this is assuming
that the headers of those files are intact. If the commerical recovery
programs cant recover the files then it is unlikely that you will get
any further.
If there is vital data on the disk then you could always send it to a
company specialising in data recovery.
