I found out that RIP processes its
ISO image by a script named mkusb.sh
to bring itself onto a FAT formatted
USB stick.

So this looks very appealing.
Vreixo, do you get the copies of this conversation ?

I peeked into
  http://www.sfr-fresh.com/linux/misc/syslinux-3.72.tar.gz:a/syslinux-3.72/utils/isohybrid
Is there a natural language form of the
algorithm ?
(Although "seek or die" is a very natural
way to express the intention, i would need
substantial time to understand the unpack()s.)
We'll have to implement in C language.

Have a nice day :)

Thomas
