As a solution to installing syslinux on RHEL5, you might want to use the 
packages from:

 	http://packages.sw.be/syslinux/

That is, if you trust me ;-)

Otherwise use the SPEC file from the SRPM, download the tarball yourself 
and build on a system you trust. (You can do the same with Peter's SRPM 
package in fact)
