[syslinux] PXE linux starts slowly

This sounds like a case of "deaf receiver syndrome", the problem is
actually that the network stack doesn't receive any packets at all.

Is it possible to post the output of the original make process to check any differences ( I have gcc 4.2.3 and nasm 2.09) or at least the version of the tooling needed?

You're unlikely to be able to build with the ancient toolchain in RHEL 4.
