Turns out the issue was the EDD probe at the very start of the Linux
init process.  It took half a minute on the submitter's system (only
when booting from CD), so he thought that the system froze.  Looks like
something changed in this area between 2.6.26 and 2.6.32.  Peter, this
also happens to be your domain, have you got an idea perhaps?  Out of
curiosity, mostly, this isn't particularly serious.
