One thing... you may want to try 3.85-pre6.  It's somewhat of a
longshot, as I don't think you're having the same bug that that is (or
perhaps more importantly, I don't think the bug detector will find it),
but it does fix a bug.

Again, a memory dump would help tremendously in actually tracking down
the problem.  There isn't all that much I can do without one.
