Hallo, H.,

Du meintest am 29.03.10:

Maybe - and I see other people can do the job ...

I've tried (with the WDSLINUX Wiki page as template)

timeout 1200
prompt 0

# KBDMAP german.kbd

F1 menu-Disketten
F2 menu-Klonen
F3 menu-Rettung

default vesamenu.c32

# neu, nach WDSLINUX

MENU MARGIN 10
MENU ROWS 16
MENU TABMSGROW 21
MENU TIMEOUTROW 26
MENU COLOR BORDER 30;44	# 20ffffff # 00000000 none
MENU COLOR SCROLLBAR 30;44	# 20ffffff # 00000000 none
MENU COLOR TITLE 0	# ffffffff # 00000000 none
MENU COLOR SEL 30;47	# 40000000 # 20ffffff
# MENU BACKGROUND	MyMenuBackgroundPicture640x480.jpg
MENU TITLE	PXE Boot-Menu
# ---

label memtest
    MENU LABEL Speichertest
    kernel images/memtest

LABEL local
    MENU DEFAULT
MENU LABEL Boot from Local Hard Disk
    localboot 0

MENU SEPARATOR

# -----------------------------------------------------------

but it doesn't show a menu like those I see on magazine CDs.

When I change from "prompt 0" to "prompt 1" then I can switch with the
function keys (and don't see anything like a menu structure), but with
"prompt 0" I only see a black screen - not very instructive.

"syslinux 3.84" tarball from Slackware-current (25. Jan. 2010)

Maybe a very small template somewhere under "syslinux.zytor.com" may
help.
And I'm searching for a (explained) list of the options I can use to
beautify my menu.

Viele Gruesse!
Helmut
