I still build syslinux for RHEL3, RHEL4, RHEL5 and RHEL6 and I can attest 
that building works fine on these vanilla distributions.

For RHEL5 that includes gcc 4.1.2 and nasm 0.98.39. At least the RHEL5 
package is used on a daily basis.
