Thanks Gene,

I've don't have an Ubuntu chroot to hand, but I found that the problem goes away 
when I build in a fresh Debian Lenny chroot.  So now I'm using Debian to build 
an RPM for CentOS 5.5.  That's a bit odd, but I don't mind if it works!
