What would be a clear way to name that directory in man/syslinux.1:
    syslinux base directory
    syslinux work directory
    syslinux root directory

That name could be used in an additional line like:
    ldlinux.sys will then use that subdirectory as its base directory.

That might require an additional section in the manpage that explains
how ldlinux.sys uses the base (or whatever) directory.
