Could you please test the Syslinux "convenience" MBR?

   $ cd /path/to/syslinux/
   $ cat mbr/mbr.bin > /dev/harddisk

Also noted at:

If this MBR also fails in the same way, then I guess the MBR can be 
forgotten about. :)
