After replacing all .c32 files and isolinux.bin with the prebuilt
binaries in syslinux-5.00-pre6.tar.xz and rebuilding the ISO with:
genisoimage  -r -l -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -b
isolinux/isolinux.bin -c isolinux/boot.cat -o ../ods.iso -V "VOLID" -A
"AUTHOR" .

everything works perfectly.

Helmut, could you provide details about you distro and build system,
including the versions of make, gcc, nasm, binutils, and perl?  You
either have a broken build box or there's an unexpected build
interaction.
