Aha, I see what you mean. I think we're OK because the non-mingw GCC
variants really shouldn't be turning -mms-bitfields on by default - that
would just seem ludicrous and it would break millions of lines of code.

So, it's true that the incompatibility is not mingw specific and it's
possible to force the issue to appear by compiling with -mms-bitfields.
But we're never going to turn that flag on and the only reason we see
the breakage in win* at all is because some GCC developer turned the
flag on for us by default for the mingw-* targets starting in 4.7.
