Thanks, that does help. At least we know it's taking the 32-bit entry
path.
I opened the following bug report to track this issue,
http://bugzilla.syslinux.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21
Does vmware display the register contents when it crashes? That info
would be useful to try and diagnose what's going wrong. It's probably
not making the transition to 32-bit mode correctly.
Out of curiosity, what is the kernel version that you're booting?
