[syslinux] installing only pxelinux?

Yes. A good start might be to use these c32 files (pasted from one of my 
scripts):

    [ "menu.c32", "vesamenu.c32", "ifcpu.c32", "ifcpu64.c32",
    "reboot.c32", "chain.c32", "ldlinux.c32", "libutil.c32",
    "libmenu.c32", "libcom32.c32", "liblua.c32", "libgpl.c32" ]

Those are for the quite common cases of using ifcpu/ifcpu64 to determine 
special kernels for some CPU types, offering a (graphical) menu and 
being able to either chainload the bootloader of a BIOS disk or rebooting...
