Thanks.  I took a quick look at the git history a few moments ago, and it looks
like there were substantial changes.  For example, it looks like the config
file used to be parsed by assembly language, not C.  Since I don't have any
familiarity with the code, it is extremely unlikely that I can debug this in a
reasonable amount of time.  For me, it is probably wiser to switch to grub2.

Would it be useful to open a bug at http://bugzilla.syslinux.org also?

I suppose it could make sense to do a binary search of the officially
released binaries to see when the problem was introduced.  It sounds like
you suspect 5.00...
