Realigning can mean one of the following two things:
- realigning partitions after they've been created
- changing the drive mapping so that the first logical sector is
  skipped (and the first actually addressable sector starts at 512
  bytes)

This is needed because pre-Vista Windows start the first partition on
sector 63 by default, and if the filesystem clusters (which are
usually 4kB) aren't aligned with the physical sectors, this causes a
very noticeable performance drop, especially when writing.
