The biggest problem, I think, is that there are BIOSes out there which 
croak on high drive numbers, not just FF.

The problem with the status of drive 7F -- which is part of the original 
specification -- is that at a lot of BIOSes do not implement it, or 
worse, return garbage information.  ISOLINUX uses it has "plan B" (if 
the original DL query didn't work).
