FTR, the suggested patch for the SERIAL directive is posted in:

There are at least 2 other directives that (should) accept different 
types of notations: LOCALBOOT and SYSAPPEND (IPAPPEND).

The usage and interpretation of the different formats for each of these 
3 directives are different, so the only thing that they have in common 
is that they (should) allow different notations (hex, decimal...).

Please note that all 3 directives have suffer from bugs in the past, in 
part related to how their parameters are parsed. Additionally, the 
SYSAPPEND directive has also received patches since v.6.03 (but they 
are only available in UNofficial git repositories for now).

A review of the parsing code of these 3 directives might be worth, so 
to double-check that indeed all valid formats are interpreted 
correctly, and maybe some code / reasoning / algorithm could be 
borrowed from one directive to the other(s).
